About the event
Learn to identify wood species by studying wood grains and their physical properties. Develop a deeper understanding of the natural and cultural histories of prominent regional trees, including claro walnut, black acacia, bay laurel, monterey cypress and others.
Scott will lead the group through choosing a small piece of wood from his collection and transform it into a hand-crafted, functional keepsake for the table: cutting/serving board, candlestick, tray, serving spoon, napkin ring(s), etc.
Participants will recieve a demonstration of how to safely use hand tools, including chisels and gouges, hand planes, spokeshaves and drawknives, hand drills and saws.
Apply a surface texture, graphic component, or stamped pattern using punches, wood-burner, torch, carving tools. Experiment with finishing techniques and choose the appropriate finish for your project.
We will finish by using these new objects in a simple family style mea,l with Preston wines to accompany.
